The Robot at the end of the world.

Welcome to the Behind the Scenes for The Robot at the end of the World.

The Robot at the End of the World is the project where I first met everyone. They already had the script when I joined, as well as a filming date. The plan was that this would be a trail run for the 48 hour film festival weekend. Done a weekend or two before, so the crew could have an idea of what was going to happen, and the stress that the competition would bring.

Roedolf had already written the script when I joined, so it got sent to me, and I just formatted it. I didn’t make too many changes from what I was given, aside from just rewriting a few of the dialogue lines. I was still learning the group dynamics and what was and was not okay. I am generally quite timid and shy when joining a new group, I do like to sit back and figure out the group dynamics.

We also already had the actress locked in, and everything else. I joined the chat - we had a discord channel for the 2021 48hour film festival. But other than that, I essentially just showed up that weekend and did as I was told.

It ended up being that not everyone could make it, but quite a few of us could, so we moved ahead. Clarissa, Roedolf, Adele and I were all there, as well as our Actress, Jamiee, her partner and dog - who had a part to play. There was also Kurt, a sound guy and our project producer for this one and the actual competition as well.

It was a lot of fun, and my first film set. I took a lot of behind the scenes photos, and had an amazing time. This film, and these people, reassured me that this was what I wanted to do for a living.

I spent most my time right near the camera, and Roedolf, reading the lines that were going to be voice over thoughts, so that Jamiee had something to act on. Clarissa and Adele bounced between the body of the Robot, and resetting the props. Adele also made our lovely robot prop, and acted as our Assistant Director.

I think one of my favourite moments was when we were filming Jaimee walking through the hallway. We all had to cram ourselves in there while Jamiee walked one way, then we had to spin around and do it all again. I did get Jamiee to take a photo of how we all squished in. (Something we would unknowingly repeat during the competition).

We learnt quite a lot during filming too, it was a great preparation for the 48 hour film festival. I walked away with three pages of notes by the end of the day, and a short debrief. We also got a neat little short film, one that was, for a lot of us, our first ever complete film.

Not only that, but we also made friendships that we’ve carried through to today, and completed several other projects with, with many more planned and in pre-production.

Honestly, deciding to do the 48 hour film festival, and this project. Was one of the best things I did all year.

Here we goo!!

How many people can we squish in a kitchen? Not as many as we can fit in a hallway.

Kurt did our sound, but also got distracted by doggo cuddles (didn't we all)

And our view of her!

I sat in a doorway, in order to be out of sight for the camera, but still able to read the voice-over lines for Jaimee to act on.

Kurt also had a doorway to hang out in.
